The First and Only Book of Sack 2.0
The First and Only Book of Sack 2.0
Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Stack entertained, provoked and sometimes exasperated Star Tribune readers since he drew his first cartoon for the newspaper in 1981. That’s the job of an editorial cartoonist, and Steve mastered the art form.
"I read the paper, I crack a joke and I draw a picture,” he told a reporter when he won the Pulitzer in 2013. That’s the kind of humility you might expect of a native Minnesotan, but it’s not that simple. The Pulitzer judges described his wining portfolio as a “diverse collection of cartoons using an original style and clever ideas to drive home his unmistakable point of view.”
When Steve announced his retirement in April 2022, many readers suggested we update “The First and Only Book of Sack,” first published as part of the Star Tribune’s 150th anniversary in 2017. The first edition, which won a Minnesota Book Award in 2018 and became the most successful book the Star Tribune has published. This “2.0” collection includes more cartoons and Steve’s thank-you note to readers as he steps away from daily newspaper work. We hope you enjoy taking another look back at the extraordinary work of one of the best opinion journalists of his generation.
