"He performed thousands of times, for millions of people, from intimate nightclubs with a purple piano and a mic, to elaborate arena shows, to jamming all night with friends at Paisley Park. He played the way he felt it — funk, jazz, punk, pop. Disregarding conventions of gender and stardom, he changed looks as it suited him. He wrote songs as he was inspired and made videos in the image he had created for himself. He quietly or boldly nurtured up-and-coming musicians. He fought with the recording industry and granted interviews with the media on his own time, carving his own path to commercial success. He was both rock star and artist: self-made, visionary, fiercely independent. And now, he is deeply missed."
This is a special two-page reprint from the May 1st, 2016 edition of The Minnesota Star Tribune, pages SA8-SA9. Final print size is 18"x18".
